Pharmacist Job Responsibilities at Northwest Compounders

There are 2 primary functions a pharmacist at Northwest Compounders serves: Prescription Processing and Prescription Checking.
Prescription processing encompasses all of the following: multitasking, answering phones, typing, restocking office supplies at your workstation, lifting items weighing up to 20 lbs., standing or sitting for the duration of your shift, processing prescriptions into our pharmacy software, providing patient consultation over the phone and in person, sending and receiving emails and faxes, building new formulas, researching new formulas and ingredients, troubleshooting difficult orders, providing excellent customer service, speaking with upset customers, working with upset customers to resolve issues, performing DUR in accordance with pharmacy law, keeping current on all CE and licensure requirements with the OBOP, operating ethically and legally at all times.

Prescription checking encompasses all of the following: checking every compound, and “pour” out for 100% accuracy; intermittent lifting of containers weighing up to 20lbs, standing in place (when not walking around the lab) for the entire duration of the shift (not including lunches and breaks), providing QS checks, volume checks, pH checks and all other midpoint functions of order fulfillment; verifying that shipping and billing are performed 100% correctly, holding technicians accountable by performing “write-ups” whenever an error is discovered in the checking process, verifying that the drug, dose and therapy are appropriate for the patient receiving the medication, placing completed prescriptions in the appropriate area (mail bin, NDE bin, will call, control safe, etc), lead by example in the lab: minimize personal conversations on the clock and keep technicians focused with polite reminders to stay on task when distractions occur.

Secondary functions: Some pharmacists may also serve secondary functions such as direction of training, director of sterile operations, general operations manager, etc. Pharmacists holding these positions must schedule time to perform duties pertaining to their secondary function and must do so in a way that does not put a pinch on the staffing of the processing room. Generally speaking, time spent on secondary functions would be scheduled in advance and should not overlap with time that other pharmacists have scheduled to perform their secondary duties.

Processing Technician Job Responsibilites

Prescription processing is the primary function of the Processing Technician role at Northwest Compounders.

Primary responsibilities include answering incoming telephone calls and appropriately triaging calls to pharmacists, processing new prescriptions and refill requests using pharmacy software, managing pharmacy voicemail messages, faxing refill requests to prescribers, assisting processing pharmacists with routine projects, and providing customer service to walk-in patients by completing will-call transactions at the front desk. This is a fast-paced, customer-facing position requiring frequent communication with patients, prescribers, and other healthcare professionals while maintaining accuracy and efficiency.

This position rotates between the processing area and the front desk. All primary processing responsibilities may be performed from either workstation, with the exception of assisting walk-in customers, which is performed exclusively at the front desk.

Secondary functions of the Processing Technician role include sorting prescription hard copies, cutting bubble wrap for shipping purposes, shredding protected health information (PHI), performing general organizational tasks, attending regular team meetings, and assisting pharmacists and supervisors with special requests (projects, tasks, etc.).

Successfully processing prescriptions requires several steps, some of which require low, low/moderate, and occasionally moderate physical effort, specifically using the fingers, hands, wrists, forearms, arms, shoulders, voice, and hearing. Completion of these responsibilities is fairly continuous and alternates between computer-based work, telephone communication, and face-to-face customer interactions throughout the workday.

Tasks or functions that require physical effort include sitting or standing for extended periods throughout the work shift; frequent use of a computer, keyboard, mouse, and telephone; continual use of the fingers, hands, wrists, and forearms while entering prescription information and navigating pharmacy software; frequent speaking and listening while assisting patients, prescribers, and coworkers by telephone and in person; intermittent walking between the processing area, front desk, and other pharmacy work areas; occasional bending, reaching, and organizing files, supplies, and workstations; occasional lifting and moving of containers weighing up to 20 pounds; and performing any other activities necessary to accurately process prescriptions and provide excellent customer service.

Order fulfillment (not associated with compounding) is the primary function of the Pharmacy Technician role at Northwest Compounders.

Primary responsibilities include accurately fulfilling prescription orders by selecting and preparing medications for shipment or pickup, preparing shipping labels, verifying prescription information, and completing all steps necessary to ensure orders are processed accurately and efficiently. Order fulfillment requires continuous attention to detail while maintaining productivity and quality standards.

Successfully fulfilling prescription orders requires several steps, some of which require low, low/moderate, and occasionally moderate physical effort, specifically using the fingers, hands, wrists, forearms, arms, and shoulders. Completion of these steps is fairly continuous but alternates between varying levels of physical effort throughout the workday.

Tasks or functions that require physical effort include lifting and moving containers weighing up to 20 pounds (the majority of containers weigh less than 10 pounds); standing for the majority of the work shift, excluding scheduled breaks and meal periods; intermittent walking throughout the production and laboratory areas; occasional bending, kneeling, and reaching to clean work areas and access supplies; continual use of the fingers, hands, wrists, forearms, and arms while manipulating liquids, filling containers, drawing liquids into syringes, applying labels, marking dosing syringes, modifying bottle caps for easy opening, cutting materials with scissors, cleaning workstations, and performing any other activities necessary to accurately fulfill prescription orders.
